03. Backyard Adventures, Lockdown Style

We are still in the middle of some pretty serious lockdown restrictions here in Nova Scotia and therefore cannot venture further than our own neighborhood in search of adventures. Thankfully, we are blessed with a backyard, excellent deck and woods to explore during these times.

This week we decided to take advantage of the weather just before the dreaded black flies and mosquitos drive us back indoors. We decided to put our makeshift firepit to the test and roast ourselves some hotdogs! The sun was shining, the wind kept some of the early bugs at bay and the kids were able to enjoy quite a few hours outside.

It can be funny as an adult when it comes to spending time outside in your own backyard. If you are anything like me, it can be hard to relax at first. I always feel like I should be ‘doing’ something – yardwork, blogging work or some sort of project. The idea of just allowing myself to sit still and relax without some other agenda is difficult for me.

Thankfully, after a bit of self talk, I managed to sit still, enjoy the sunshine and breeze, listen to the laughter of my kids and spend some quality time with Steve, chatting about nothing in particular. It was a much needed re-connection to the things we love most – being together enjoying the outdoors (and eating, of course!)

We also managed to set up our deck this week! I love putting up our gazebo, outdoor furniture and fire table! It’s like adding an extension to the house every spring. With BBQ season finally here, I am SO exited this year! Steve has made a bottle of his DELISHIOUS homemade BBQ sauce and I can’t wait for our first official BBQ dinner. Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to post pics and his recipe in next weeks Life post! (sorry Steve, it’s just too good to keep a secret!)

It is amazing how this pandemic and the lockdowns have actually brought so many families closer together. Perhaps this is the silver lining we need to remember and not let go of when things do get ‘back-to-normal’. The connections with those we love most and those simple things we take for granted when life gets too loud – the laughter of your children, sunshine, food and love. Really, what more do any of us strive for?
